How KW agent Dan Grieb finds inspiration by being 1% better every day
On October 6, in Kona, Hawaii, Chris Nikic became the first athlete with down syndrome to successfully complete the Ironman World Championship. He did that with the help of real estate professional Dan Grieb who used the affirmation of being 1% better in everything you do, every day, to inspire and motivate the athlete. In order to qualify for the Championship, Chris completed a full Ironman race in 2020– another first. For that feat, Tim Tebow presented him with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the 2021 ESPYs with his friends, family, and “Uncle Dan” — Dan Grieb of The Dan Grieb Home to Sell Team of Keller Williams at the Parks — cheering on in the front row. Chris Nikic and Dan Grieb When Nikic crossed the finish line in Kona, he jumped into the arms of Dan Grieb, who was at his side for every inch of the 2.4 mile swim through the Pacific open-water, the 112 mile ride up some of the most challenging terrain and into strong winds, and finally on the 26.2 mile run. But, Dan was also there every step of the way for the countless hours of training that are emblematic of endurance sports. I have not had the honor of meeting Chris; however, we are blessed to know Dan, who now has completed 21 Ironman races. Lucido Global had the privilege of hearing Dan speak at last year’s Momentum, which was co-sponsored by HW+. Bob Lucido and Dan Grieb Dan spoke openly, humbly, and movingly about his difficult upbringing and the circumstances that still plague his siblings today. In spite of his challenging upbringing, Dan is one of the most genuine, selfless human beings in our industry. Whether in real estate or serving those with special needs, Dan has a sincere commitment to contribution — no small feat in a society in which high-achievers are most often motivated by personal significance. Whenever an individual transcends terrible circumstances to emerge a better person, I think of an excerpt from Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life: “Many, perhaps even most, of the adults who abuse children were abused themselves as children. However, the majority of people who were abused as children do not abuse their own children. This is a well-established fact, which can be demonstrated, simply, arithmetically, in this way: if one parent abused three children, and each of those children had three children, and so on, then there would be three abusers the first generation, nine the second, twenty-seven the third, eighty-one the fourth—and so on exponentially. After twenty generations, more than ten billion would have suffered childhood abuse: more people than currently inhabit the planet. But instead, abuse disappears across generations. People constrain its spread. That’s a testament to the genuine dominance of good over evil in the human heart.” JORDAN PETERSON’S 12 RULES FOR LIFE We all have something to learn from both Chris and Dan, who have both transcended challenges outside of their control. Congratulations on your Ironman feats and your significant contributions towards inclusion. Check out the article on realtrends.com!
Home Painting Tips
As far as home upgrades go, painting is a quick + easy way to upgrade the entire look of your space. Check out these useful painting tips if you are looking for an easy way to give your home a dramatic facelift! When Should I Paint?: The best time to paint your home really depends on where you live, climate, and humidity. It also depends on what you are painting, whether it be your home’s interior or exterior. Here are a few base guidelines to remember when picking the best time to paint your home. Exterior: Avoid painting the exterior of your home when it’s below 50 degrees F. Colder temperatures can cause the paint to loosely adhere, resulting in it rolling off. Also avoid hot humid days, the heat and humidity can cause the paint to dry slowly, and crack when it is dry. Wind can cause issues as well. If it’s windy outside, your paint can get whipped around and land on everything around your house, including cars, plants, and pets. The best weather for painting is a low humidity, sunny, between 65 and 90 degree F day. Spring and Fall are great for painting the exterior of your home, as long as you pick a dry, windless day. Interior: Humidity can also affect painting the interior of your home for similar reasons as it does the exterior. It will take longer to dry and may crack. Dehumidifiers can help prevent this when painting inside. You’ll want to leave the room untouched for longer than you think the paint will take to dry, just in case. So, make sure to paint during a time when you have no plans for big events or guests coming over. What Colors Should I Pick? Sherwin Williams Color of the Year 2022: Meet Evergreen Fog, Sherwin Williams pick for color of the year 2022. Green is the common theme for interior designer’s paint choices this year, but the shade variations have a dramatic impact on the overall look of the space. Evergreen Fog is soothing, subtle, and the perfect shade to freshen up any space. It’s neither too bright or too dark and teeters right between neutral and colorful, providing your space the balance it needs, while matching a wide variety of other colors and design styles. If you’re looking to elevate your space, Evergreen Fog is a great paint choice. Behr Color of the Year 2022: The Behr 2022 paint color of the year is a relaxed, and uplifting sea glass green expressing peace and tranquility for forward movement. Introducing: Breezeway. Where a fresh coat of paint meets a breath of fresh air. Breezeway awakens your senses, naturally harmonizes with shades of white, gray, and natural wood tones for effortless style in any room. How Do I Make My Paint Projects Stand-Out?: Paint a Door Frame - If painting even an accent wall seems like too much work, try painting a door frame. This is a smaller-scale way to add major design appeal to any room in your home, that almost anyone can do in as little as an hour. The bolder the paint choice, the better. With such a small pop of paint and color, you’re going to want it to have a major impact, so don’t be afraid of those dark or striking shades you’d typically avoid. Notice how the hot pink draws the eye in the photo to the right, but isn’t too much because it’s only on a small area of the room. Paint Just the Trim - Painting just the trim of your home can add an interesting look, and doesn’t take special paint brands or a lengthy painting supplies list. All you need is a little focus and decent brush control. Apply painter’s tape to the edges of the walls and the floor, leaving only molding and trim exposed. You’ll also want to protect floors with a plastic paint guard. Use the tip of your brush to cut in toward the middle on the top and bottom of the molding. Then, with long brushstrokes, cover the space inbetween. Most designers choose a bright white to make molding and trim pop, but color can sometimes be used for a more bold look. Paint Window Shutters and/or the Front Door - Painting the entire exterior of a home can be expensive and time consuming, however you can really up your home’s curb appeal by painting your window shutters and front door. This can be done by yourself, quickly, and without too much paint. Dark colors tend to look best as they make a more striking and visible difference, in contrast to the rest of the home. Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
Tis’ the season for crunching leaves under your feet, warm colors, and a great time cozy up indoors! The end of summer is a great time to start preparing your home for the fall months before it gets too chilly. Whether you complete the checklist items yourself or hire a professional, taking action now can help prevent costly damages in the long run. Clean and stow mower and outdoor equipment- Remove any remaining debris and buildup from your mower, and move it to a covered storage space to prevent any potential weather damage. *Also, although grass appears to stop growing in the fall, the roots are actually growing deeper to prepare for winter. Now is the best time to fertilize and reseed your lawn. Cover or bring outdoor furniture indoors- It probably cost you quite some time and money to create that perfect outdoor space, so if you want to get another summer season out of it, properly store the items in a garage or shed. If you don’t have anywhere to store them, buy a waterproof furniture cover with coating to protect from the elements and air vents to protect against mold and mildew. For cushions and smaller items, consider purchasing an outdoor storage bin. Prune plants and trim any tree limbs too close to house or power line- Pruning your trees and shrubs after the leaves turn helps encourage healthy growth. Heavy snow and ice can cause damage in the winter, so trim any tree limbs that are too close to power lines or your home. Before you trim near any electrical conductors, contact BGE or check here for options to work safely. Turn off outdoor water and store hoses- Drain and disconnect all garden hoses from outside spigots to prevent any water freezing and remember to close any shut-off valves serving outside faucets, to prevent pipes from bursting. Seal cracks around doors and windows- Weather stripping is easily the most cost effective way to rein in heating and cooling costs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heat loss through windows is responsible for 25-30 percent of heating energy use. Clean gutters and downspouts- Clogged gutters can lead to damaged exterior surfaces and water in your basement. Before the leaves fly this fall, have your gutters cleaned, then covered with mesh guards to keep debris from returning. Direct drainage away from the house- Ensure that water drains properly and doesn’t pool. Pooling can cause damage to foundations, driveways, and walkways. Be sure water is not coming down behind gutters and that all support brackets are securely in place. Inspect roof for missing shingles or any damage- Stay on top of roof problems by inspecting your roof (with the aid of binoculars if necessary.) Scan the entire roof for missing, curled, or damaged shingles. Check ridge shingles for cracks and wind damage, and look for damage to metal flashing in valleys and around vents and chimneys (for your safety, we recommend hiring a professional for this step.) Replace filter in furnace (also consider hiring a professional to clean ducts and service furnace)- Once a year, it’s a good idea to have your heating system inspected by a professional. To avoid the last-minute rush, consider scheduling this task in early fall, before you have to crank up the heat. Check the chimney for blockages and make sure the damper is working- Call a professional to inspect and clean your chimney. Fireplaces that are regularly used during the season should have an annual cleaning to prevent dangerous chimney fires. Gas fireplaces should also be inspected by a technician to check output is correct, and clean up any residue that has started to block any ports or vents. After a routine check, your technician should make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors, and that you are aware of any repairs your gas fireplace may need.
