7 Tips for Moving in Winter

by Bob Lucido Team

Moving in winter might not be the easiest time of year, but with a little preparation, it can go smoothly and even have some advantages—like less competition for moving companies and potentially lower rates! Cold weather and unpredictable conditions don’t have to throw you off track.

1. Check the Weather and Have a Backup Plan

Winter weather can be unpredictable, so keeping an eye on the forecast is essential. A big storm can delay your plans, and freezing temperatures can create slippery conditions. Have a backup plan with your moving company and be ready to reschedule if the forecast looks rough.

2. Prepare Your New Home for the Cold

Before moving day, make sure your new home is ready to welcome you—and warm enough to be comfortable. Ensure the utilities are turned on, and consider setting the thermostat a bit higher before you arrive to make moving boxes inside easier. Also, check that all walkways, steps, and driveways are clear of ice and snow. Lay down cardboard or tarps to protect floors from muddy or wet shoes.

3. Dress in Layers and Stay Warm

Moving requires a lot of physical effort, and you’ll likely be going in and out between warm and cold environments. Dress in layers so you can adjust to the temperature changes easily. It’s also wise to have gloves that allow for a good grip but keep your hands warm. Keep hand warmers in your pockets and bring a thermos of hot coffee or tea to keep spirits high during the cold day.

4. Protect Your Belongings from the Cold

Some items, like electronics, are sensitive to extreme cold. Pack these items carefully, insulating them with blankets or bubble wrap, and keep them in heated areas of the moving truck if possible. Also, avoid packing liquids that could freeze or expand, like cleaning supplies, paints, or certain toiletries.

5. Hire Professional Movers with Winter Experience

Movers will likely know how to handle snow, ice, and cold temperatures and have the proper equipment to make the move safer and more efficient. Plus, winter tends to be a slower season for moving companies, so you might be able to secure a better rate.

6. Clear and Salt Walkways Ahead of Time

Safety is crucial on moving day, especially when ice or snow is involved. Take time to shovel and salt any walkways, driveways, or steps before moving heavy furniture. Not only will this protect you and the movers, but it also helps prevent any slips that could lead to damaged items. Have extra salt handy to add traction as needed.

7. Pack an Essentials Box for Cold Weather

A winter essentials box is a must-have for any winter move. Fill it with items like gloves, hats, scarves, hand warmers, and blankets so that they’re easy to access. You might also want to pack an extra set of clothes and any necessary toiletries for the first night in your new home, just in case you’re too exhausted to unpack right away. Keep this essentials box in your car rather than the moving truck so you can grab what you need quickly. Include items like paper towels, snacks, and chargers for easy access.
