Closet Goals

by Bob Lucido Team

January is the perfect time to tackle the ever-lingering task of organizing your closets. If you’ve been dreading it, here’s some tips to transform your closets into highly organized and efficient storage areas without spending major money. You’ll feel so much better when you’re done!

TAKE IT FROM THE TOP

Step 1: Clear out your closet completely.
Start from the top and work down, sorting your things into 3 piles- keep, donate, trash.

Step 2: Come up with a strategy for the keep pile.

  • CREATE A SYSTEM - Systems are particularly helpful for the organization of your clothing closet. Organize your clothes by category; color, season of wear, frequency of wear, etc. whatever works best for you. This gives you the opportunity to organize accordingly; whether it be by cycling through what items remain in your closet and what goes in storage, or where all the items live in your closet for easiest and best access.
    Helpful tips:
  • Save the top shelf for items you use the least often.
  • Place larger and heavier items on the floor or lower shelves.
  • Structure the remaining shelves by order of importance (the most often used should go in the shelf easiest for you to see and reach).
  • Place frequently used items toward the front of each shelf.

Step 3:
OPTIMIZE YOUR SPACE

Clothing Closets: Try installing organization tools to optimize every inch of storage space in your clothing closet.

  • Retractable Wall Storage
  • Corner Shelves
  • Hanging Shoe Racks
  • Floor Storage
  • Stand-Alone Racks (for seasonal items)
  • Adjustable Racks (to make room below or above)
  • Bag & Belt Hooks

Bathroom/Linen Closets:

  • Fold and organize items by type, keeping any matching bed sheet sets and matching hand/bath towels together.
  • Purchase bin dividers to help keep things separated.
  • Keep medications in clear plastic bins that are labeled by need.
  • Install pull-out shelving if necessary to reach smaller items at the back.
